Coming Out Mono-blogs U of C

Hi and welcome to the Coming Out Mono-blogs, your source for everything related to the Coming Out Monologues being held at the University of Calgary, March 15th and 16th, 2012. 

The Coming Out Monologues originated in University of California, Riverside in 2007 and similar productions have since been put on by Texas A&M and University of Calgary. Performed by members of the LGBTQ community and allies the monologues contain a spectrum of performances from humorous to heart breaking and everything in between. Some performers write their own monologues, other performers will present monologues written by others, and some people may choose to write a monologue and have someone else perform it. 

Here at the University of Calgary we value individual stories and believe that empowerment can be found through the expression of personal experiences. Exploring the immense range of perspectives from current and previous generations builds a sense of community and helps to create allies.

This year’s production will be taking a new direction from the fabulous shows performed over the last 2 years at the U of C. Both evenings (Thursday, March 15th and Friday, March 16th, 2012) will take place in the Boris Roubakine Theatre at the U of C, doors at 7:30pm, show at 8pm. This year our aim is to have completely different monologues and performances by young performers both evenings and to incorporate varying art instillations and video pieces by artists in the community. We are also very excited to be incorporating writing workshops for folks who are interested in writing monologues but aren’t sure what to include or where to start (occurring late January 2012, more info to come!). In addition we will be holding 2 Crafternoon sessions open to performers and community members looking to create Coming Out Monologue buttons, t-shirts and other goods and learn more about the production (occurring in February and March, more info to come!). 

All performers are welcome to audition regardless of experience and auditions are open to U of C members and members of the community. Audition 1- Saturday, January 21st, 12-3pm TFDL (Taylor Family Digital Library, University of Calgary) 3rd floor Boardroom

Audition 2- Tuesday, January 24th, 6-8pm TFDL 3rd floor Boardroom
